This is a dessert BIG in our culture. Flan is a delicious custard covered in “caramelo” which means “caramel.” It is super easy to make and it tastes DIVINE. I know there are a lot of people that dislike it. My kids actually are not that much into it, because they dislike the texture, not the flavor. Flan is a little more “set” than pudding, and it just melts in your mouth leaving behind that vanilla flavor. You can also make chocolate flan, dulce de leche flan, and the list goes on and on.
- 1 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk (we used fat free, but the whole milk gives it a creamier texture)
- 1 cup of milk (2%)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla
- 3 eggs (do not use substitute)
- 1 cup of sugar + 1/2 cup of water for the caramel
First, you need to make the caramel so you can put it on the bottom of you ramekins.
It will start to bubble.
Then it will start changing color.
When it gets to this color, turn the heat off.
This is the consistency:
Put mixture in ramekins. Cover with aluminum foil and bake @ 325 degrees for 55 minutes.
They are baked! Cool a little bit and then with a sharp knife go all around the custard to loosen it from the sides of the ramekin.
Cover with the serving plate and flip. It should come off and look beautiful.
Serve with fresh whipped cream.
